Bluesfest: Day 8

It was the night of Kiss and it was a crazy day because we all know what kind of band they are.
I didn’t get to cover them because security was so tight.
So I decided to cover one act that was playing at the same time at Bluesfest.

Just to let people know who is reading this, I didn’t stay for the whole set of each acts because I was running all over the place.
So bare with me if I don’t know the names of the songs.
The show started off with the Arkells playing at the Rogers Stage.
I didn’t hear Oh!, The Boss Is Coming.
But I heard Deadlines and Ballad Of Hugo Chavez.
At least Max the lead singer remembered who I was.
Arkells @ Ottawa Bluesfest
Stopped by the Barney Danson Theatre and checked out local band Anchors.
Great local band to check out live.
Anchors @ Ottawa Bluesfest
After that I went to the Bank Of America stage and caught abit of the Montreal band Beast.
I think it was brave of them to open up for Kiss.
Its good for them get new fans liking their music.
Great experimental/trip-hop band to see live.
Beast @ Ottawa Bluesfest
At the Rogers stage, The National (Not the CBC Evening News) from Brooklyn, New York.
Hearing Matt Berninger sing just gave me chills down my spine.
They are such an amazing band and glad they were in Ottawa to play for Bluesfest.
I wish I got more time to see their set.

At the Subway Stage, Japandroids finally played in Ottawa.
They were suppose to play in May but one of members fell ill and had to cancel.
At least I got a chance to see how great they are live.
And they were very loud and crazy.
Sad that it was a low turnout due to alot of people waiting to see Kiss play.
But they will be back in the fall to play a proper show.
Japandroids @ Ottawa Bluesfest
At last I decided to hit up the Blacksheep Stage and see K’Naan play.
Surprised with the big turnout for him.
Majority that were in attendance were the teenagers and those not interested in seeing Kiss.
More like played some songs from his Polaris Prize nominated Troubadour
Songs like ABCs, T.I.A., Wavin’ Flag, Somalia (acapella), Fatima and many more.
I had an amazing time and didn’t expect that much hysteria.
Things got wild when he did his encore, the kids decided to jump over the fence and get on the stage with be with K’Naan.
All hell broke loose and the stage people needed security quickly.
It was just insane and all volunteers came over and said that alot of people are getting into fights near the gates just to see K’Naan.
This was the second time where things went crazy. Of course first time being Girl Talk.
But all I have to say that I am a big fan of K’Naan.
A brilliant artist to see live.

That was my night of Bluesfest.

Bluesfest 2009: Day 4

Oops I made a mistake and did Day 5 first
But here is day 4.
It was a horrible rainy day at Bluesfest.
But that didn’t stop people from coming over and listen to the music.

The acts that I saw were:
United Steel Workers Of Montreal
Amazing as always even with the rain. I was happy to finally hear Tracy Dean live.
United Steel Workers of Montreal @ Ottawa Bluesfest
Giant Hand
He sounded great for those that didn’t want to get wet in the rain.
Giant Hand @ Ottawa Bluesfest
Jill Barber
Finally I got a chance to see her live and she looked absolutely beautiful. That dress she wore was amazing.
Very short set due to mostly with the heavy rain. But I loved when she got the audience to participate in singing “Oh My My”
Jill Barber @ Ottawa Bluesfest
Rachael Yamagata
She reminds me of either Fiona Apple or Cat Power
Rachael Yamagata @ Ottawa Bluesfest
Hey Rosetta!
Amazing band to see live!!
Hey Rosetta! @ Ottawa Bluesfest
Ornette Coleman
It was a unique approach to have it in the Lebreton Gallery where the tanks are exhibited.
I think they should do more shows in that area of the War Museum.
Ornette Coleman @ Ottawa Bluesfest
Matisyahu
Interesting time to see this Jewish hip-hopper.
Matisyahu @ Ottawa Bluesfest

Bluesfest: Day 3

Wow the festival keeps getting better.
This time it was mostly a American indie folk-rock-alternative theme except for one who is a local.
This time I stayed for a whole set.
The acts that I saw were:
The Dodos

Lindsay Ferguson(Ottawa singer)
I had to help out a friend take photos of her set which he needed for the Wakefield Newspaper.

I was blown away hearing The Dodos, Okkervil River and Devotchka.
This was another fun night of music.
I wonder if I should give away my Devotchka signed ticket stub???

Bluesfest: Day 2

July 9th was my favorite night of Ottawa Bluesfest.
It was better than Day 1 mostly because I knew the bands/musicians that were playing on Day 2 of Bluesfest.
I had a great time running over from stage to stage.

The acts that I saw:
Kyrie Kristmanson
Kyrie was totally amazing live. She wore her famous white fuzzy hat during Song X but took it off after it.
Kyrie Kristmanson @ Ottawa Bluesfest

Holy Fuck
They were absolutely amazing live and I was happy to catch Lovely Allen at the end.
Holy Fuck @ Ottawa Bluesfest

Metric
Seen them alot of times now. Glad that they sang “Help! I’m Alive” live.
Metric @ Ottawa Bluesfest

Iron & Wine
I wish I got to stay longer for his set.

Ben Harper and Relentless7
All I have to say that he was totally loud.

Converters and Black Hat Brigade

Friday night with all the events happening I went to Cafe Dekcuf to see one of my favorite band from Toronto called Black Hat Brigade.
This is my third time seeing them and I was very happy to see them again.
All I have to say is “Third time’s a charm”.
They were out in support of their new CD called “Fathers”.
I didn’t get a chance to see City of A Hundred Spires because of timing issues mostly but I hope their set was great.
Converters @ Cafe Dekcuf
The first band to play was Converters.
I never heard of them but I was told that they are very new and it was their second or third live show.
The band is a trio and I was impress by their set.
Probably might get to see them more at future shows.
Black Hat Brigade @ Cafe Dekcuf
Waiting a few more minutes for Black Hat Brigade to set up.
They have alot of equipment to put up on the stage and it was crazy.
Was a little worried because I didn’t know how long their set was. If it was going to pass 12:15am “I am outta of here”.
They were very amazing and love their high energy sound.
They are a band you have to see live. Why? Because each members (minus the drummer) alternate turns in playing a different instrument and vocals.
Its great to see the dynamic of the band and never gets boring if its the same old routine.
Don’t worry the band will be back in August.
I recommend that you see them live.
Black Hat Brigade @ Cafe Dekcuf
Funny story, I bought their CD “Fathers” and I noticed that I got two of the same CDs.
The drummer was doing the packaging in the car, he was getting car sickness and might have accidentally put two of the same CD in the packaging.
Thought it was hilarious and I was honest in returning the second CD back to them.

Ennuie/The Balconie/e.s.l.

I went to the Black Sheep Inn to see Ennuie, The Balconies and e.s.l. play.
I am good friends with the people who are in Ennuie and The Balconies and wouldn’t mind coming and supporting them
e.s.l. are from Vancouver and heard abit off them from CBC Radio 3.

Overall it was a great intimate show. I really liked it.
The start of the fall season with these kinds of shows down at the Black Sheep Inn.
